Chewing, nipping, barking, jumping, digging, etc. These behaviors have driven many an owner to seek professional dog training lessons.
What’s the one thing these behaviors have in common? … any guesses? They are all natural dog behaviors! Of course we don’t want behaviors in our homes that are destructive or defensive but we have to understand that dogs are animals.
How do I stop unwanted behaviors?
Well, start by asking yourself, “What do I want my dog to do instead?” If you don’t have a good idea of what you want them to do instead, that’s the first step. Any time you stop a behavior, it’s extremely important to teach your dog what you DO want them to do. Otherwise, they will find something else to do and you probably won’t love their next best idea.
Is your dog jumping? Do you prefer that they sit when approached?
Are they chewing furniture? Would you prefer that they chew toys instead?
Are they digging in the yard? Is the location inconvenient or do you need to provide another outlet?
Step 1: Prevent the unwanted behavior from happening.
Step 2: Teach your dog to do something else instead.
Check with your trainer for ideas on how to stop unwanted behaviors, teach your dog to something else instead, and provide appropriate outlets for mental and physical activities!
